A recent report by the National Research Council estimates that radon is responsible for between 15,000 and 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States.
Where do air pollutants come from?
According to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, a "typical" home in the United States has between .5 and 1.5 air changes per hour. Assuming your home is somewhere in the middle, say at 1 air change per hour (not a "tight house" but not a "drafty house" either), this would mean that every hour all the air in your home is replaced with new air.
Over 50% of this "new" air comes from your basement or crawl space. As warm air rises in the home, cool air from the crawl space is sucked into the living areas of the home. Called the "stack effect," it's how a chimney works. This, combined with other factors, means a significant amount of the air you breathe actually comes from your crawlspace.
